Even as a person who loves Interpol, particularly the first two records. I'm pleasantly surprised here. On first listen, I kind of love it. Maybe it sounded good pairing it through a walk through a woods, but I think it sounds great.
It seems like a lot of people are the Interpol subreddit aren't as hot on it initially but I think this album is just what the band needed. This album sounds like them coming into their own as a trio. El Pintor was solid, but there was nothing too distinctive about it in my mind. It felt like TOTBL without Carlos, still good, but nothing amazing. Maurader though, undoubtably sounds like them, but there are some twists and turns that are really welcome and enjoyable. To me it's like Foo Fighter's Concrete and Gold, still definitely them, but with some new textures and elements. Songwise, I really love 'Keep in Touch' which sounds dark and brooding.
It has the most Carlos D-esque bass playing from Banks on the record and some somber guitars that shift and change with the song while somehow maintaining a consistent hypnotic groove. The drum though! 'Party's Over' is also really great and I do quite enjoy 'Mountain Child'. I actually enjoy 'Complications' peg-leg kind of groove.
'Flight of Fancy' may be my least favorite as it feels a little generic. Instrument wise, I think the drums are the real winner on this album. Sam Fogarino is a super underrated drummer and consistently he kills it on every track. He'll play with a swing or a swagger on a lot of these songs while playing a busy part while still keeping it all together. His outro of 'Stay in Touch' is amazing.
Loving the guitars here. It sounds like if I've gotten a sense of the guitarists tones and playing instincts, Paul Banks is in the left channel whereas Daniel Kessler is the right. Kessler very much keeps his distinctive reverby chime while playing some noodly high pitched lines.
His playing is pretty quintessential to their sound. Banks is also playing some great guitar lines that shift and change a lot, particularly impressive when he's also gonna singing on the same stuff live. Both guitars play together well as a cohesive Interpol until, but have their own flair and voice. There's a new looseness that I like. Paul Banks is really Interpol's second best bassist.
And I mean that in the best way possible. He's not Carlos D, but he locks in with the drums nicely and has some nice runs. Their is an occasional octave jump that seems to be an implicit nod to the previous bassist.
The bass is slightly more in the back of the mix and the tone is less defined and more instead more textured. Could be a combination of the overall production and Banks' using of a P-bass as opposed to Dengler using a notably punchier Jazz bass. Nevertheless I'm really enjoying the tone on Maurader when fuzz is applied. It'll sound kind of like a gurgling motor on something like 'The Rover' or a menacing chainsaw on 'NYSMAW'. Paul Banks seems to kind of found where he naturally is to sit as a singer at this point.
I do miss his more conversational low end at times, but thankfully he dips into that here, even if he seems to utilize more of his nasal high end these days. Chislovaya mandala cheloveka rasschitatj onlajn. At the end of the day, I really dug this record after fulling expecting to listen to it and just kind of shrug and say that the band is past their prime. Best one since Antics.
